Zanzibar: Where to Start Planning Your Trip

Updated: 19 January 2026 - Author: Nolene Vilonel

Zanzibar packs a lot into one island: a UNESCO-listed old town, beaches suited to entirely different activities depending on which coast you pick, and a spice-growing history that still shapes the food. If you're just starting to plan, here's the shape of it before you dive into the detail.

Zanzibar: Where to Start Planning Your Trip

The island in brief

Stone Town, the old quarter, is worth a day or two on its own — narrow lanes, the Darajani Market, and rooftop spots like Emerson on Hurumzi for sunset views over the harbour. The beaches split by character: Nungwi in the north for a lively, resort-heavy stretch with good diving; Paje on the southeast for kitesurfing; Jambiani for something quieter and more boutique. Mnemba Atoll, offshore, is the name that comes up repeatedly for snorkelling and diving. Jozani Forest is the place to see the Zanzibar red colobus monkey, found nowhere else on Earth, and a spice tour through the island's plantations covers the cinnamon, clove and nutmeg history that gave Zanzibar its old nickname, the Spice Island.

Hotel Riu Jambo — Nungwi

For a straightforward first stay, Hotel Riu Jambo sits directly on Nungwi Beach with 24-hour all-inclusive covering meals, drinks and snacks — five restaurants, four pools plus a kids' pool, and a RIULand kids' club for ages 4-12. Kendwa Beach is a two-minute walk away if you want a change of scene without switching hotels. From R17,780 per person sharing, all-inclusive, flights from Johannesburg included.

Where to go deeper

Each of these gets its own proper coverage elsewhere rather than a rushed paragraph here: Zanzibar's beaches, region by region covers Nungwi, Paje, Jambiani and Uroa in more depth; Zanzibar's spice farms and history goes into the island's cinnamon-and-cloves past and Prison Island's tortoises; and if a meal at The Rock Restaurant is on your list, that's covered separately since the tide timing genuinely affects how you plan the evening.
