Chale Island, Kenya: A Private-Island Stay on the South Coast

Updated: 16 January 2026 - Author: Paddre Ngobene

South of Diani, Chale Island sits just off Kenya's coast — small enough that one resort covers most of it, with mangroves and indigenous forest making up the rest. Getting there is part of the experience: the final crossing depends on the tide, which is worth knowing before you plan a tight arrival schedule.

Chale Island, Kenya: A Private-Island Stay on the South Coast

The Sands at Chale Island

This is a genuinely quiet private-island stay, built around a scattering of room types rather than one uniform block: thatched Ocean View Bandas facing beach or lagoon, an Overwater Suite on stilts above the lagoon, and a two-level Suite on the Rocks reached by its own walkway with a private pool. Four dining venues cover the range from Kenyan-international to an Italian trattoria and a sushi bar, plus an overwater sunset deck for evening drinks.

Access runs via Ukunda Airport, then a road transfer to the mainland crossing point and a short tide-dependent boat trip to the island itself — arrange transfers around your confirmed flight times rather than assuming a fixed schedule. From R25,300 per person sharing for 5 nights, Breakfast & Dinner, flights from Johannesburg included.

Getting off the island (a little)

The resort's own dive centre runs snorkelling and diving trips along the surrounding reef, and guided walks cover the island's mangroves and forest — colobus monkeys are a genuine, regularly-reported sighting on these walks, not just marketing copy.

For a proper day out, Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park, further down the coast, is one of Kenya's better marine parks for dolphin sightings alongside coral reef snorkelling. Diani Beach itself is also reachable as an excursion if you want a livelier stretch of coast for an afternoon without changing your base.

FAQ

How do you get to Chale Island?
Via Ukunda Airport, then a road transfer to the mainland crossing point followed by a short boat trip — timed around the tide, so confirm this with the resort ahead of arrival.

What's the best time to visit Kenya's south coast?
December to March and July to October are the driest windows. April-June is the long rains, quieter and cheaper but with more disrupted outdoor plans.

Do South Africans need a visa?
Yes — an eTA (electronic travel authorisation) is required in advance, applied for online.

Is Chale Island suitable for a quiet, low-key stay?
Yes — it's built around a small, low-key private-island atmosphere rather than a large resort complex, which suits couples or anyone wanting fewer people around more than it suits a big group.
