Turquoise lagoons, white sand, and a dry season that lines up with South African winter — Mauritius is a reliable escape when you need sun in June, July or August. Just 65km long and 45km wide, the island packs in volcanic landscapes, a genuinely mixed culture, and some of the best lagoon swimming in the Indian Ocean. Long before European ships arrived, the island was already known to Arab and Malay sailors; it was later named by the Dutch, in the late 16th century, after Prince Maurice van Nassau.

Black River Gorges National Park

Mauritius' largest national park is also its best hiking. Trails wind through 6,574 acres of native forest, with a good chance of spotting rusa deer, wild pigs, or the Mauritian flying fox along the way. January to September is the most comfortable window for a day hike here — check current entry rates locally, as these change from year to year.

Chamarel's Seven Coloured Earth

A short drive from the park, the Chamarel dunes are a genuine geological oddity: volcanic soil that settled into bands of red, brown, purple and blue. May to October brings out the colours most vividly.

Île aux Cerfs by speedboat

One of Mauritius' best-loved coastal spots, reached by boat rather than road. Expect strong water sports options once you're there, plus a detour to Grand River South East waterfall if you have half a day to spare. If you're travelling as a group, a package deal usually works out cheaper than negotiating a speedboat price on the day.

Flic en Flac beach

On the west coast, Flic en Flac is the easy choice for a slower beach day — calm water, a laid-back fishing-village feel, and decent scuba diving and sailing close to shore.

Casela Nature Park

Casela combines a safari-style drive-through section with ziplining and quad biking across its grounds — a good half-day if you want something more active than a beach.

Grand Baie for deep-sea fishing

On the north coast, Grand Baie is the base for deep-sea fishing trips, with blue marlin, black marlin and mako shark all within range. November to April is generally the strongest season for it.
