Antalya city break: old town, beaches and Roman ruins

Updated: 22 October 2025 - Author: Nolene Vilonel

Antalya, on Turkey's Mediterranean coast, works year-round — beaches, a genuinely walkable old town, and enough Roman and Hellenistic history nearby to fill several day trips beyond the coastline itself. It suits a romantic getaway as easily as a family holiday, and its old core rewards slow wandering over a rushed checklist.

Antalya city break: old town, beaches and Roman ruins

Kaleiçi (Old Town)

Antalya's old town is built for aimless wandering — Ottoman-era houses alongside Roman and Byzantine remnants, all connected by narrow, maze-like streets lined with boutique hotels, galleries and cafés. The Tekeli Mehmet Paşa Mosque, dating to the 18th century, is worth stepping into for its tilework alone, and a coffee stop somewhere along the alleys is as much part of the Kaleiçi experience as any single landmark.

Konyaaltı Beach

Antalya's most convenient public beach, Konyaaltı draws locals and visitors alike through summer, with a palm-lined promenade backed by cafés and restaurants. The nearby Aqualand water park and jet-ski rentals give it an edge over a purely relax-on-the-sand day, if that's what you're after.

Antalya Archaeological Museum

One of Turkey's most significant museums, this collection spans more than 5,000 years, from the Bronze Age through Roman and Byzantine periods — its Roman and Hellenistic statuary, drawn from nearby ancient cities like Perge, Xanthos and Patara, is considered among the finest of its kind anywhere in the country.

Antalya's own take on Turkish food

Piyaz, a white bean dish with parsley, onion, tahini and lemon, is treated as a full main course in Antalya rather than a simple side salad, as it's often served elsewhere in Turkey. Hibeş, a regional specialty made from tahini and chickpeas, is a genuinely Antalya-specific dip worth seeking out rather than assuming it's available everywhere in the country. For something sweet, look for a fried, syrup-soaked pastry filled with walnut and cinnamon — a rich, satisfying way to end a meal.

Aspendos

About 40km from Antalya, Aspendos holds one of the best-preserved Roman theatres anywhere in the ancient world, built around 155 AD — its scale is genuinely striking as you approach, cut directly into a hillside. Nearby ruins of a basilica, aqueduct and agora round out the site, and it remains a working venue for performances and festivals today.

Old Marina and Republic Square

Antalya's Old Marina, tucked into a bay backed by dramatic cliffs, is a strong spot for a boat tour along the coast, or simply a drink with a view — a handful of restaurants nearby serve fresh seafood and local dishes. Republic Square, the city's central gathering point, hosts major public events and is worth a stop just to take in everyday city life.

Lara Beach

South of the city centre, Lara Beach pairs smooth white sand with strong family amenities and a genuinely lively hotel strip along the coastal road behind it — Blue Flag certified, and a strong pick for a clean, safe swim. Evenings here are worth timing for sunset, with the Bey Mountains visible across the bay as the light fades.
