5 Must-Do things

in Kenya

Kenya stands as one of the top tourist destinations. With affordable excursions, the country is filled with stunning national parks and breathtaking landscapes, offering far more adventure opportunities than safaris in other countries.
Spot the Big Five in the Maasai Mara
The Maasai Mara forms part of the larger Serengeti ecosystem, which spans the Tanzanian and Kenyan borders. Here, millions of animals roam freely across the plains. You’ll encounter diverse wildlife, from the Big Five to lesser-known species like serval cats and elands.
Visit a Maasai Village
Many multi-day trips to the Maasai Mara include a visit to a Maasai village, where you can observe the traditional way of life. Learn how the Maasai build their mud huts and why they relocate every few months due to termites.
Search for rhinos at Lake Nakuru
Lake Nakuru is home to numerous white rhinos, which can often be seen grazing along the main roads. Unlike the more elusive black rhinos, these white rhinos are much more accustomed to human presence.
Go on a boat safari at Lake Naivasha
Lake Naivasha, a freshwater lake near Lake Nakuru, is a common stop on multi-day itineraries after exploring the Maasai Mara and Lake Nakuru. Here, you can enjoy a boat safari and take in the surrounding wildlife.
Cycle through Hell's Gate National Park
Hell's Gate National Park is one of the few places in the world where you can cycle through a park, riding alongside giraffes, buffalo, and zebras.

Must-See places

in Kenya

Kenya is practically synonymous with the word "safari." Few places on Earth inspire such a sense of adventure and romance. The variety of experiences in Kenya is remarkable, with wildlife watching being the highlight for most visitors.
Amboseli National Reserve
Amboseli is one of Africa’s premier locations for seeing large herds of elephants up close. The park is also home to lions, cheetahs, giraffes, impalas, elands, waterbuck, gazelles, and over 600 bird species, making it a wildlife enthusiast’s paradise.
Lamu Island
Lamu, a small island northeast of Mombasa, exudes old-world charm. Its UNESCO-listed Lamu Old Town is the oldest continually inhabited town in Kenya, with a history dating back to the 12th century.
Mombasa

Mombasa is a melting pot of cultures and a magnet for a wide range of tourists. As Kenya’s second-largest city and major port, it showcases British, Portuguese, Arab, Indian, and Asian influences in its architecture and cuisine, creating a rich cultural tapestry.
Ol Pejeta Conservancy
Located about 200 kilometers north of Nairobi, near Mount Kenya National Park, Ol Pejeta Conservancy offers intimate wildlife encounters. This 90,000-acre private reserve focuses on conservation and sustainability, making it a must-visit for eco-conscious travelers.
Diani Beach
Bask in the warm sun and take in the stunning views of palm-lined shores and powdery white sands at Diani Beach. Stretching for 10 kilometers from the Congo River in the north to Galu Beach in the south, it’s one of Kenya’s top beach destinations.

Must-Try food

in Kenya

Kenyan cuisine is one of East Africa’s most delightful surprises, blending traditional earthy flavors with the fiery spices of various Asian influences.
Mahindi Choma
Mahindi choma, or grilled corn, is a popular street food throughout Kenya. It’s corn on the cob cooked over a charcoal fire and often served with a sprinkle of chili or lime spice for added flavor.
Vendors typically use corn husks to handle and serve the grilled maize. Affordable and readily available, most Kenyans enjoy mahindi choma as a quick snack on their way home from work. Make sure to try this treat during your Kenya vacation.
Mutura
Kenyan mutura, similar to blood sausage in other countries like Ireland or Spain, is a must-try when visiting Kenya. This unique delicacy is made from a mixture of goat or cow meat, fresh blood, and spices, all stuffed into clean intestines.
The sausage is then grilled over an open flame, creating a smoky and flavorful dish. Don’t miss the chance to sample mutura while on your Kenya holidays.
Kachumbari
Kachumbari, a fresh salsa made from tomatoes, onions, and chilies, is a common side dish with many Kenyan meals. Avocado often takes center stage as an additional ingredient.
As part of Quintrip’s affordable Kenya packages, you can enjoy Kachumbari, served at many roadside stalls and restaurants. Its Indian roots and spicy kick from the chilies make it a crowd-pleaser.

Kenya is a stunning African nation. While its renowned safaris in places like the Maasai Mara are popular, there are plenty of other gems to discover, such as Diani Beach, Mount Kenya, Lake Naivasha, and the breathtaking views of Kilimanjaro from Amboseli. After two visits myself, I’ve decided to write a comprehensive guide to planning a budget-friendly trip to Kenya, full of tips to help you prepare for an unforgettable adventure.

If you're planning to travel through multiple countries, or stay for an extended period on the African continent, you can also reach Kenya by car or 4x4. It shares borders with Tanzania, Uganda, and Ethiopia. While the paperwork can be a bit lengthy, there are usually no major issues—just make sure you have enough cash and the necessary documents. It’s best to speak English, as communication can otherwise be tricky.

Kenya experiences two distinct seasons: the dry season and the rainy season. The first dry season runs from December to March (similar to summer), and the second from July to October (more like winter). Temperatures can soar to 40°C during the day in summer, while winter temperatures hover around 30°C. Nighttime is cooler, with temperatures averaging 20°C in winter and 25°C in summer. It’s essential to choose the right season for your Kenya holidays.

In between the dry seasons are two rainy periods: a longer one from April to June and a shorter one from November to December. The landscapes transform dramatically with the rains, from golden savannahs to lush green forests. July and August are peak travel months due to the favorable weather, and January to March are equally great months to visit, with fewer crowds despite the warmer temperatures.

A trip to Kenya is ideal for those wishing to explore Africa’s beauty. The country is a wildlife haven, perfect for safaris of any length. Both adults and children will love exploring the national parks and reserves, home to animals like buffalo, rhinos, elephants, lions, and more. Kenya also appeals to outdoor enthusiasts. Nestled along the Great Rift Valley, the country offers incredible geological wonders such as Lake Magadi with its surreal colors, and Mount Elgon with its shimmering waterfalls. To wrap up your trip, spend a few days at Diani Beach, Malindi, Mombasa, or any of the white sandy beaches along the Indian Ocean’s cerulean waters. Kenya’s museums and monuments are also worth visiting, while shoppers will enjoy browsing the local Maasai necklaces and Swahili jewelry available in village markets and shops.

Mount Kenya provides a refreshing change of pace for travelers. While scaling the peak is reserved for experienced climbers, the lower slopes are accessible to all and offer an entirely different way to experience Kenya’s wildlife and flora, from baboons to raptors.

For many, going on a safari in Kenya or another African nation is a lifelong dream. And with good reason: seeing wild animals in their natural habitats, set against stunning backdrops, is the stuff of adventure dreams.

A safari is not like a zoo visit. You only encounter the animals that are present at the time, and not all species are found in one place. To see a wide range of wildlife, you’ll need to visit several parks. Explore our selection of budget-friendly Kenya packages for a safari experience like no other.
