Things to Do & See in Vilanculos

Visit Bazaruto Archipelago National Park

The Bazaruto Archipelago is a cluster of five islands off the coast of Vilanculos and is Mozambique’s most famous tourist attraction. Declared a National Park in 1971, it is home to a wide variety of marine life, including dugongs, turtles, whales, and over 2,000 species of fish. The islands are surrounded by virgin coral reefs, making it a haven for divers and snorkelers. Whether you’re interested in exploring the underwater world or simply relaxing on the white-sand beaches, the Bazaruto Archipelago offers an idyllic escape.

For kitesurfers, the calm, shallow waters and consistent breezes make the archipelago a dream destination. Visitors can also enjoy dhow sailing, beach picnics, or just basking in the natural beauty while watching the sunset over the Indian Ocean.

Explore Machilla Magic

Machilla Magic is a community-based arts and crafts project located just 25 kilometers north of Vilanculos. Established in 2000, Machilla Magic works with over 60 local artisans and their families to create unique handcrafted products that reflect Mozambique’s vibrant culture. Ninety-five percent of the items are made from recycled materials, including barrel stools, woven furniture, and palm crafts. Visitors can browse the wide selection of eco-friendly crafts and learn about the community’s efforts to support sustainable tourism.

Machilla Magic is a must-visit for anyone looking to take home a piece of Mozambique’s art and culture while supporting the local economy.

Visit Manyikeni: A Historical Site

Manyikeni, meaning "the place of trading," is an archaeological site located 52 kilometers west of Vilanculos. Dating back to the 12th-17th centuries, it was once a regional center for Zimbabwean culture and an important trading hub. The site features a large stone enclosure similar to the Great Zimbabwe ruins, built without mortar using stacked limestone blocks. Archaeological discoveries at Manyikeni suggest it was linked to the coastal trade with the nearby site of Chibuene, where seashells were used as currency.

Visiting Manyikeni offers a fascinating glimpse into Mozambique’s ancient history and its connections to the broader African continent.

Govuro River Canoe Excursion

For nature lovers, the Govuro River canoe excursion is a tranquil way to experience Mozambique’s lush wetlands and birdlife. Paddle along the Govuro River Wetland in lightweight Canadian canoes, surrounded by warblers, kingfishers, eagles, and other bird species. The peaceful river setting offers a chance to observe wildlife up close while floating through serene landscapes.

As the sun sets, the river comes alive with fireflies, creating a magical ambiance as you relax with a drink in hand. This guided excursion is one of the most unique and relaxing ways to explore Vilanculos’ natural beauty.

Sunset at the Red Dunes

One of the most magical experiences in Vilanculos is sailing to the Red Dunes on a traditional dhow boat. The 45-minute trip from Vilanculos’ coast offers stunning views of the coastline as you approach the towering red dunes, which create a striking contrast against the lush green forest and white sandy beaches. As the sun sets over the dunes, the entire landscape glows with vibrant colors, offering an unforgettable sight.

This is a perfect way to end a day in Vilanculos, combining the beauty of nature with the tranquility of the ocean.
