WELCOME TO PARADISE! That’s what a huge sign as you enter the town of Paje on the island of Zanzibar should say! Yep, I’ve been to some stunning beaches in my time people, but this one takes the biscuit! Well, it at least takes a top 4 biscuit! I mean there’s some stiff competition out there with Australia’s Turquoise Bay, Nicaragua’s Little Corn Island and Kenya’s Diani Beach ranking pretty high as well! But what all these serious beauties have in common is their stretches of white sand, swaying palm trees, gorgeous turquoise oceans and stunning sunsets. So, if you’re into any of these as much as me, I can highly recommend getting Paje, Zanzibar on your list!
Read on to discover more about this secluded paradise…
Located off the coast of Tanzania, Paje is situated on the island of Zanzibar, which can succinctly be summed up as Indian Ocean amazingness (yes, I’m using that word!) Situated on the east coast of this fabulous island, Paje is essentially a huge, long strip of white sand bordered by a small village on one side and a collection of beachfront accommodation services and eateries, as well as turquoise waters on the other. There’s a huge tidal range here and often a good breeze, so Paje is fast becoming a mecca for water sports… but not yet!
Yes, right now, Paje is delightfully peaceful and quiet; and while it is on the map many tourists prefer the busier, more developed north beaches of Zanzibar. I have friends that visited the north instead of the east of Zanzibar and after hearing their experience and seeing their photos, I’m so glad I chose Paje as my beach destination in Zanzibar… just saying!!
The first step to reach Paje is to get to Zanzibar in Tanzania itself. This can be done via an expensive flight from various African or European destinations (check out Skyscanner for the best rates) or via a cheaper ferry option from Dar Es Salaam to the capital Stone Town. From Stone Town, you can either get a private taxi – priced at around 25,000 Tanzanian Shillings (TZS) and taking 1 hour – or you can catch 2 local buses.
If you're searching for a place to stay in Paje, the Ebb and Flow Apartments are a terrific option for people who want to be close to the beach. In addition, if you want to dive, you might be able to obtain a discount through their affiliation with a local dive school. There are also wonderful alternatives for people on a budget, such as New Teddy's Place and Drifters, which provide lower prices while still being near to the activity. Paje is well-known for its water activities, notably scuba diving. The beautiful, warm waters make it a diver's paradise and provide opportunities to witness a variety of marine life such as turtles, starfish, trumpet fish, moray eels, and octopus. Buccaneer Diving provided me with a wonderful diving experience, and I strongly recommend them for their expertise, safety, and customer service. Paje, in addition to diving, has excellent prospects for surfing and kitesurfing, making it an emerging center for those sports. As it grows in popularity, it's advisable to go early to avoid the crowds.
It is advised that you stay at least four nights to get the complete Paje experience. A week would be great for beachgoers and those seeking to learn kitesurfing, thanks to its stunning beaches and water activities. My personal vacation was sadly restricted to only two nights, and I felt I lost out on much of Paje's beauty.
Paje has a wide range of food and drink alternatives, including both local and expat-owned enterprises. Mr Kahawa and B4 were two of my particular favorites. Mr Kahawa is a seaside café that serves great hummus and falafel wraps, green smoothies, and some of the best coffee I've had outside of Australia. B4, on the other hand, is a late-night hangout known for its great burgers and exquisite thick potato wedges. If you're on a limited budget, the nearby hamlet of Paje has plenty of groceries and food.
Paje is generally regarded safe, however it is vital to be cautious when wandering along the beach at night, especially for single women. On the sandy strip, you'll also find the typical assortment of beach merchants, although they were all nice and harmless during my stay. Because Zanzibar's population is mostly Muslim, clothing requirements are traditional, and modesty is advised when visiting the hamlet. Local women may also be seen harvesting seaweed at low tide, which is used to manufacture soap that is marketed locally by a women's cooperative. It is a wonderful way to help the community, and the soap is of good quality, wrapped in banana leaves, and available in local shops. This is my comprehensive guide to Paje, Zanzibar.
