Mauritius: when to go and how to add adventure to your trip

Updated: 24 November 2025 - Author: Paddre Ngobene

Mauritius' climate and its more unusual activities rarely get their own space in most guides — worth covering properly, since knowing when to go and what to add beyond the beach genuinely shapes how the trip feels.

Mauritius: when to go and how to add adventure to your trip

Climate and when to go

Sitting between the equator and the Tropic of Capricorn, Mauritius stays warm and pleasant year-round, which makes it a genuine any-season destination — something not every tropical island can claim. The island runs on a Southern Hemisphere calendar: a wetter summer from October to April, and a milder, drier winter for the remaining months. Rain in summer tends to be short and heavy rather than day-long, so it rarely writes off a beach day entirely.

Sub-scooter diving

One of Mauritius' more unusual activities, sub-scooter diving combines a small personal submersible with scooter-like mobility underwater — no scuba certification required, and a genuinely different way to explore the island's reefs and marine life than traditional diving or snorkelling.

Tamarin Bay

On the west coast, Tamarin Bay is known for encounters with wild dolphins in their natural habitat — a genuinely special experience, but one worth approaching thoughtfully. Wild dolphin populations here have faced real pressure from the volume of tour boats operating in the bay, so it's worth booking with an operator that limits boat numbers and keeps a respectful distance, rather than assuming any tour is equally considerate of the animals.

Adventure activities

For a different perspective on the island, a helicopter flight near Le Morne offers a view of Mauritius' famous "underwater waterfall" — an optical illusion created by sand and silt drifting off the underwater shelf, visible only from the air. Ziplining, guided forest and mountain hikes to waterfalls, and other adventure activities round out Mauritius' less beach-focused side, worth building into a trip if you want more than lagoon time.

For Le Morne Brabant, Port Louis, Chinatown, Mahébourg and deep-sea fishing, see our earlier guides: Mauritius beyond the resort and Port Louis.

A few practical questions

When's the best time to visit Mauritius? Year-round works, though May-September (winter) offers drier, slightly cooler conditions for outdoor activities.

Is sub-scooter diving suitable for non-divers? Yes — no certification is required, making it accessible to most visitors regardless of diving experience.

How do I choose a responsible dolphin tour at Tamarin Bay? Look for operators who limit boat numbers and follow guidelines on approach distance, rather than booking purely on price.
