Mauritius for Families: A Quieter Base at Trou aux Biches

Updated: 9 January 2026 - Author: Nolene Vilonel

Grand Baie gets most of the attention for Mauritius nightlife, but a few kilometres north, Trou aux Biches offers a genuinely quieter alternative — a real fishing village atmosphere alongside one of the island's better family-oriented resort options. Worth knowing if you want beach-resort comfort without a busy strip on your doorstep.

Mauritius for Families: A Quieter Base at Trou aux Biches

Trou aux Biches Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa

This 5-star Beachcomber property sits directly on Trou aux Biches beach, roughly an hour from the airport, with suites and villas laid out so rooms don't directly face each other — a small design choice that adds up to more privacy than it sounds. Seven pools (many private to specific rooms), seven restaurants covering everything from Italian to Indian to seafood, and a genuinely large activity programme: waterskiing, windsurfing, snorkelling, kayaking and stand-up paddling all included, with diving, golf (at two nearby courses) and deep-sea fishing available at extra cost. Family rooms, a kids' club and babysitting are all part of the setup, which suits this property well to families or groups rather than a couple wanting total seclusion. Pricing is on enquiry rather than a fixed rate — Quintrip can quote against your specific dates — with return flights from Johannesburg or Cape Town included.

Building day trips around it

Chamarel's Seven Coloured Earths — naturally layered dunes shifting between red, brown and purple depending on the light — pair well with the nearby Chamarel waterfall, one of the island's tallest, both an easy half-day from the north coast.

Black River Gorges National Park covers over 6,500 hectares of protected forest and is home to Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire, Mauritius's highest point at 828 metres — the hike to the summit is a proper trek rather than a casual walk, rewarding you with views across most of the island's southwest.

Closer to Trou aux Biches itself, Ile aux Cerfs remains the standard boat-trip day out for snorkelling, while Belle Mare on the east coast is the better bet if windsurfing or kitesurfing is the actual goal rather than a passing thought. If you want the guided version of any of this — a private catamaran trip with snorkelling and a beach barbecue is a genuinely popular way to cover several of these in one day rather than driving between them separately.

For a taste of everyday Mauritius rather than resort dining, dholl puri (a flatbread filled with split peas and curry) and rougaille (a Creole tomato-based sauce, usually with fish, chicken or sausage) are the two dishes worth seeking out at a local stall rather than a hotel buffet.
