Bali's best beaches, area by area

Updated: 19 November 2025 - Author: Quintin Carlson

With so many Bali articles focused on temples, volcanoes and rice terraces, the island's beaches deserve their own proper look — five in particular cover very different moods, from calm family-friendly resort water to some of the best surf breaks in Indonesia.

Bali's best beaches, area by area

Nusa Dua

Bali's most polished resort enclave, Nusa Dua sits behind a reef that keeps the water calm and shallow — a strong choice for families and anyone who wants a straightforward, low-key beach day backed by upscale hotels and manicured grounds.

Seminyak

Bali's trendiest beach strip, Seminyak pairs a long stretch of sand with beach clubs, boutique shopping and some of the island's best sunset dining — less about swimming, more about spending the whole afternoon and evening in one place.

Uluwatu Beach

Below the clifftop Uluwatu Temple, this beach is really about the surf — a world-class reef break that draws experienced surfers from around the globe, set against some of Bali's most dramatic coastal scenery. Not the easiest beach to reach (a steep set of steps down the cliff face), but worth it for surfers and photographers alike.

Sanur

On the island's east coast, Sanur is Bali's original resort beach — calm, shallow water protected by an offshore reef, a long paved beachfront path for walking or cycling, and an easy-going, slightly older-fashioned character compared to the south coast's busier strips. Its east-facing position also makes it one of Bali's better sunrise spots.

Keramas

A serious surf destination on the east coast, Keramas is known for a powerful, fast reef break that's hosted professional surfing competitions — black volcanic sand and a rawer, less developed setting than the island's more built-up beaches, best suited to confident surfers rather than a casual swim.

Choosing between them

If you want calm water and easy family logistics, Nusa Dua or Sanur are the safer picks. If nightlife and dining matter more than swimming, Seminyak wins. If you're chasing waves, Uluwatu and Keramas are Bali's standouts — just be honest about your surfing level before choosing between them.

A few practical questions

Which beach is best for beginners learning to surf? Neither Uluwatu nor Keramas — both suit more experienced surfers; beginner-friendly breaks are more common around Kuta and Seminyak.

Which beach is best for families? Nusa Dua and Sanur, thanks to their calmer, reef-protected water.

When's the best time for beach weather in Bali? The dry season, April to October, offers the most reliable sun.
